Newfoundland & LabradorForest Protection Association HELPING TO KEEP OUR FOREST GREEN AND CLEAN FOUGHT FOREST FIRES AND MUCH MUCH MORE. While we no longer fight forest fires today (relinquished fire fighting responsibilities in the mid 1960s to the Newfoundland Forest Service), our history is one of a fire origin to use a common forestry term. During its 55 year history of controlling wild fires, the Association developed an impressive array of personnel, equipment and infrastructure to assist with the task. This included well trained fire fighters, trucks, railway line speeders, fire towers and depots. All of this of course was used to suppress or extinguish the fires. But just as important then as it is today, was/is the desperate need to encourage the general public to take an active part in preventing forest fires from ever happening. For many of you who remember the 1940s, 50s, 60s and earlier years, you will probably recall many of the Association's forest fire prevention activities during that period. Things like the highway signs which were strategically placed along the highway from St.John's to Port aux Basques with slogans that read "Remember the Ember" and "Please Use Your Car Ash Tray" to mention but a few. You may also recall the smell of the newly arrived scribblers, pencils, rulers and erasers in your school, all with an appropriate fire prevention message and all provided at no charge by the Newfoundland and Labrador Forest Protection Association. And who can forget the picnic sites that preceded our current network of beautiful Provincial and Federal parks. Now you know who put them there!! We hope that you will enjoy your brief trip to our past!!
